Samuel Walter McCandless Jr. - Walter McCandless (or sometimes called Walt) is Chris McCandless' father. Although it seems that Walt was a good strong father to Chris while he was growing up this all changes when Chris grows older and find the disturbing truth about Walt’s past. In this chapter Walt is revealed as the basis for Chris’ about society because so many of the things Chris hates can be seen in his father mainly that he is wealthy, and as Krakauer shows us Chris judges him by his personal life, which is by no standard perfect. Chris discovers that his father was still married to Marcia, who was his first wife with which he had five kids, while with Billie. Walt’s actions cause Chris to see him as a hypocrite because of how he always raised his children with such high expectations. This may have been the strongest catalyst for Chris’ actions.
Billie McCandless- Billie is Chris’ mother who he seems to set equal to the actions of his father even though most of the time she is innocent. He leaves to teach her a lesson like the rest of his family but it is mostly wasted on her and she goes into grief over her son leaving.
Carine McCandless- Carine is Chris’ sister who he is very close to until he decides to leave. She and Chris are very similar however unlike him she has forgiven their parents. She took Chris’ death very hard seeing as she might have know him the best before he ran off.
